In part one of this two-part blog series, we went over some basics on important tools for digital artists to have in their toolkit. There are several items to be considering here, from computers and tablets to various accessories and programs, for digital artists ranging from cartoon creators to many other types.
At Script My Toon, we’re proud to serve numerous innovative digital artists and caption-maker professionals in the cartoon field, with a client-facing site that has both an artist and dialoger dashboard. Our artists submit their comic strips with no text, then dialog or text is inserted later on by caption-makers. We’re happy to help those who are newer to the digital art world with the identification and selection of ideal tools to assist them in this pursuit – here are a few more to consider.
Especially within a field like cartoon generation, fonts are vital aspects of the design process. There are literally thousands of different font options out there today, and they each are a little different when it comes to the kinds of feelings or thoughts they help invoke.
There are several fonts that will generally be included in your baseline programs for digital design. There are also numerous other programs, both of the free and paid variety, that you can download featuring tons of additional fonts. And if you see a font you really want to use, utilize MyFonts.com, which will help you identify any font by uploading a picture.
Especially for those who work on larger canvasses or use stylized brushes and other advanced techniques, computing power will be important. Too low a level here might cause the device to slow down or crash altogether, making it virtually impossible to complete your projects. A strong computer with a good processor will help you avoid this issue.
You also need to pay attention to important computer accessories like the keyboard and mouse. Especially if you’re using a laptop, stock options for these items tend to be relatively poor quality – consider upgrading to a wireless keyboard or a mechanical option. As far as the mouse, many digital artists prefer a pen tool with a mouse, though some others use their drawing tablet primarily for these needs.
Finally, ensure your comfort and resulting quality with a good, supportive chair. A solid chair supports posture and comfort while limiting any potential for back pain or other aches, plus will ensure things like proper airflow and back support.
